EDUC 1199.DEM01 Introduction to Education

Spring 2024

Welcome to Introduction to Education, your first course in your education major. This course is designed to help you decide if education is the career for you. In this course, we will learn about the educational system in the United States and about various important issues that impact education. We will learn about the different stakeholders in education, the ways that education is funded, how instruction is designed, and much more. Our class will begin on Thursday, January 11, and will meet each week on Tuesday and Thursday from 9:30-10:45 in the Sewell Center.

Course Learning Outcomes
- Describe current contexts for 21st-century education systems.
- Identify features of the teaching profession and Piedmont’s teacher education program.
- Identify and discuss the characteristics of diverse learners.
- Evaluate grade-level and content standards.

Textbooks

Powell, S.D. (2019). Your introduction to education: Explorations in teaching (4th ed.) New York, NY: Pearson. Please make sure you get the Revel Access code as well.
American Psychological Association. (2020). Publications manual of the American Psychological Association (7th ed.). Washington, DC. (Recommended - students will be held responsible for APA styles on all assignments)

Supplemental readings will be required as needed throughout the course. These readings will include research, professional documents, and personal reading. These will be provided to you in class.
